“The 2014 Crested Butte Plein Air Invitational was a huge success. The event presented 360 new Crested Butte area paintings by our Invited and Jury painters, and was heavily attended. 146 paintings have sold for a total of $210,000 in retail sales, so far. We would like to thank everybody who made this possible. Artists, Patrons, the community of Crested Butte, and the Oh-Be-Joyful Gallery’s (temporarily expanded) staff came together in inspiring fashion to create the biggest and best plein air painting sale I have seen.
For those who were not able to attend, the full exhibition may be viewed online here. Although many paintings sold, many of the top shelf paintings remained after the opening weekend, and we kept most of those for sale at the gallery. For a descriptive list of my choice paintings remaining, look here.
The Patrons Preview the night before the Grand Opening received an overwhelming response from patrons ready to have the first look. Patrons were able to “dot” the paintings they were interested in purchasing. For paintings that had multiple dots, straws were drawn- this was done for nearly twenty paintings!
There were patron favorites, and artist favorites as well. Chosen through anonymous voting by our Invited and Juried artist’s, the Artist’s Choice for best Invited class painting was Eric Merrell’s “Awakening Hillsides” 14″ x 14″ oil.
Artist’s Choice for best Juried class painting was Kelly Kotary’s “Ruby Range with Other Treasures“24” x 36″ oil, and an Honorable Mention to David Grossmann, whose paintings nearly sold out.
The Open class Artist’s Choice was Katie Dowling’s “Reflections of Snowmelt in July. 18″ x 24″ oil.
Congratulations Eric, Kelly and Katie for Best in Show!
Thanks to Plein Air Magazine, a sponsor of the event, these artists will all receive Best in Show ads in the magazine! Thank you Plein Air Magazine!
Congratulations are also in order for our painting raffle winners. Marlene Zanetell of Gunnison, CO was the winner of the Open Class Raffle painting “Between Storms” by Bryan Mark Taylor. And C.K. Obar of Tulsa, OK and Crested Butte, CO was the winner of the Patron’s Raffle painting “Shady Side 2012″ by Shaun Horne.
Throughout the weekend a steady crowd enjoyed a string quartet, a performance by Opera Children’s Chorus, and the vocal stylings of the very talented Tyler Hanson. Thank you to for sharing your talent. We also want to thank Scott Ferris for sharing his expertise and providing the keynote art history presentation, our non-profit sponsor Crested Butte Center for the Arts, our non-profit donors, and Plein Air Magazine for their sponsorship. We are very happy to have the opportunity to present one-of-a-kind works of art to our patrons, and to create an opportunity for these painters’ abilities to receive recognition.”
