2014 Crested Butte Plein Air Invitational Workshops
Using Color to Convey What We See,
with Eric Merrell
Thursday, July 3rd, 9 am – 4 pm
An artist’s goal is to interpret an experience in a way that it transcends the obvious and literal. Painting is about asking questions. This workshop will cover the basics of working on location, including composition and design, good color, and fleeting light. The instructor will give a demo in the morning, and work with students individually during the afternoon. All experience levels welcome.
Nocturne Painting: By the Light of the Moon, with Susiehyer
Tuesday, July 8th, 7 pm – 11 pm
Join celebrated instructor, Susiehyer, for an evening of painting in the light of the moon! Begin with a casual lecture about nocturne painting and be ready to begin painting at dusk. This will be a fine veining of experimentation with both our materials and the experience of painting outdoors at night. The class will conclude with a group critique of the paintings. It will be helpful for participants to look at the nocturnes of Frank Tenney Johnson, Frederic Remington and others before the workshop.
The Two Questions for Self-Adjusting Your Paintings, with Bill Gallen
Thursday, July 10th, 9 am – 12 pm
This half-day workshop will investigate the two main areas for correcting your work. Color, temperature, and value will be the main themes as Bill takes a study and develops it into a larger work. Design and palette management will be areas of inquiry. This workshop is suitable for all levels and will be primarily an artist-lead demonstration.
Plein Air Workshop, with Don Sahli
July 6th, 7th, and 8th. 9 am – 4:30 pm
As the foundations of plein air painting are presented step-by-step, you will learn how to simplify complex landscapes into “simple pieces” dealing with color, value, and temperature. Painting on location, taking the studio outside brings its own set of challenges. In the outdoors, things change quickly; the natural world is in constant motion. Working outdoors will train you to work with haste and to be more spontaneous in your painting!
For your convenience, the required art supplies for the workshop can be purchased and you can sign up at www.paintersjourney.com
