Our gallery’s new location in Telluride is building a presence and receiving many praises. The majority of visitors comment on the impressive quality of the artists’ work and beauty of the gallery space. The new gallery is has also enjoyed a strong early patronage.
With a winter and summer season past, the gallery has seen many local art collectors, vacationers and second home-owners, and is quickly gaining local support. The gallery has joined Telluride Arts, a non-profit organization that facilitates the ArtWalk events. Shaun has provided and mounted “ArtWalk Tonight” flags on each gallery in the early mornings of ArtWalk Thursdays. It has had a positive impact on traffic for the events, which is appreciated by the arts community.
OBJ Telluride has successfully hosted several of our artists in a small residence in town. By providing a place to stay, the artists are able to come and paint the amazing views from almost anywhere in or surrounding the town. They have left the gallery many gorgeous local scenes. We will be hosting more artists throughout the winter, and eventually would like to provide a similar opportunity for our artists in Crested Butte.
In July, Bill Gallen was the featured ArtWalk artist and gave a wonderful two-hour painting demonstration, attended by both amateur and professional painters. Bill’s free brush strokes and gestural approach make his paintings distinctive and captivating. He demonstrated how he translates a small study into a larger finished painting. He introduced his approach to color, such as starting dark and rich and working lighter, and making half-tone tints for all colors on his palette. We hope to offer more demonstrations like this in the future.
In October the gallery will be featuring a new exhibition, Views of Lone Cone by Meredith Nemirov. Coinciding with her Japanese woodblock exhibition on view at Telluride Arts Strong House gallery, her watercolors of the same subject matter will be on display at Oh-Be-Joyful. The inspiration for this body of work is Lone Cone Mountain, a local landmark in the San Juan Mountains. For Meredith, these “stand alone as a series of paintings of a particular place or subject that is part of my landscape.”
If you have the chance to stop in to see our Telluride space please do. OBJ looks forward to many seasons in Telluride, continuing to provide the region with high quality paintings from leading landscape painters.
