The Story Behind a 1.2 Million Dollar Price Tag!

Nicholas Reti “Bears in Dark Canyon” 24″ x 30″ oil $1,200,000

Consider for a moment, if this painting were to lead to the creation of a world-class museum in Crested Butte, how would that change the story of the painting’s value?

I believe a single piece of art can serve a greater purpose. In order to begin a conversation about how to establish a permanent art museum in Crested Butte, I’ve priced “Bears in Dark Canyon” at 1.2 million dollars, which at the time was the price of a one-of-a-kind historical building that would have made the ideal beginnings of a museum. Owning a gallery, the conversation about how art values are established is a frequent one. To me this painting is invaluable, and I would only part with it if it is to serve a greater purpose.

“Bears in Dark Canyon” depicts a family of black bears scrounging through the world’s largest aspen forest at its peak color. The painting captures the wild character and colorful theater of the landscapes I call home.

I am seeking an arts patron who feels as strongly as I do about preserving and telling the story about our artistic heritage. A partner who believes in not only the history project but in the mission of Oh Be Joyful Gallery – to support a vibrant local art scene, the lives of over three dozen working artists, and local working community members.
