As the volumes of information, stories, maps, and illustrations traveled eastward, the country’s fascination increased. This led to the creation of tourist trade travel publications highlighting the curiosities of the west. Famous editors of the day curated beautiful illustrated volumes from the Hayden findings.
This featured image was first printed in an 1874 publication titled Picturesque America, edited by William Cullen Bryant. Bryant hired many of the greatest artists of the time to create renderings of the photos and drawings from the Hayden Expedition. Featured is an illustration of Teocalli Mountain by Thomas Moran.
